Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 07

First night in Mexico, tons of pretty (and drunk) girls everywhere... So what do I do? Why I of course grab my camera and go wondering around the beach at night all by myself! So much more peaceful that way then getting drunk and watching people throw up over themselves... sigh...

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 01

So much moths everywhere, some of them absolutely enormous - I mean 10+ cm from head to tail. At least they don't bite.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 02

One of the eating areas. Stuffing yourself is so hard in such weather. You eat a bite, and you already feel full because of the heat - surprised how some people get fat in such a climate :p

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 03

I actually wasn't planning on doing all these night shots at first, but this one started it all. Was just sitting on one of these beach-lounge-chair things (as you can tell I completely forgot what they're called) and pressed the shutter button, luckily manual settings were set to a very long exposure, and you get this awesome photo.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 04

While sitting in the same place, pointing the camera in a different direction.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 05

Quite liked those two shots, so I grabbed the tripod, left the bag with the employees at the bar by the beach and went wondering all over the place.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 06

The photo at the beginning of those post actually took about 5-6 tries to get it right (kinda). A few times spelled the whole thing wrong, then a few times went out of the frame, so all in all the photo probably took me like 15 minutes. The end result is well worth it I think.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 08

Around midnight, right after the sun goes away completely, and right before the moon comes out, there are just a ton of stars everywhere. The last time I've seen so many stars at once was back in 2006 when I was driving though the desert in Nevada at 2 in the morning.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 09

When the moon comes out it illuminates the whole sky which on one hand, makes taking photos of the stars harder, but on the other taking photos of everything else is easier.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 10

That sun, is actually the moon.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 11

Me taking a photo of my ghost.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 12

Note the small star trails. That is how much the stars (or rather the earth) move a minute. Really wish I could set the LX3 for something longer then 60 seconds. Then again, if you think about it, 60 seconds isn't that bad, considering that most compact cameras top out at 15-20 seconds.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 13

The bright glow in the distance is actually nothing more then a few small lights.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 15

Light is light and even the dimmest light produces shadows - just look at the shadows on the ground, all from the moon. ^_^

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 14

Back in same location for another try. A bit more successful photo - just look at all that light pollution :p

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 16

The very bright lights in the distance is a different resort which is about 2km away. Also, whoops, shadow from camera... ^_^;

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 17

I can't even imagine what kind a crazy and/or drunk loon I looked like while running around the trees with the iPod at 3 in the morning.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 18

Me being a loon again.

Mexico 2009 - Night Shoot 1 19

Finally one last shot of the stars, and after this I went off to chase raccoons with the camera - that post coming in just a little bit.

Oh and btw, what do you guys think of the larger images? First of all, what do you think of the size, then how is the loading time for you and so on... This look/template isn't quite done but just am trying it out live to get some reaction from you guys. If all is jolly, gonna update every single photo walk I posted in the past. ^_^

    Beautiful stuff, man.

  2. Matthew

I really like the larger images, I can't wait for the new template. The photo of the lounge chairs is simply amazing.

  3. Ragnar

Wow, man, pure enjoyment. These are so good, totally love it. And the size is great.

  4. Barry Ward

Superb. Why don't you just crop the camera shadow off the photo?

    Michael Flux

@Barry Ward, Well, just for all the photos I post on here, I try to do no editing at all and are posting them just as they came out of the camera. Of course I could make most of them infinitely better but taking a bit of time to post process, but that would kinda defeat the whole purpose I think. ^_^; Really even cropping, I crop maybe 1/200 of the photos I post here... really as little as I can.

  5. Prometheus

What can I say that hasnt been said b4. U is a beast man. You can see shot oppotunities that I cant :(

    Michael Flux

@Prometheus, Oh come on sir, you're making it sound as if you'll never learn. I think that if anyone would be taking as much photos as I do, they'd learn :p - I mean hell, in the last 12 month I probably took over 15,000 photos :p

  6. Moign Khawaja

Great work mate! Really like all the stuff. I've got a 2MB standard broadband connection here in the UK and pics load without any hiccups. Unruly chicks vs unspoiled beauty....Glad that you went after natural beauty (I'd have done the same) and had a fab time. Thanx for sharing it with us.

  7. Smithy

Lovely photos! Really amazing work. ^^

When you create the light effect in those long exposure shots, do you actually place the entire light/iPod in front of the camera? If so, how do you avoid reflections/afterimages of yourself in the final shot?

Loading time was fine here. ^^

    Heferkimbo

@Smithy, Sometimes you can't avoid ghost images of yourself, but a way to prevent this is by wearing dark cloth... but he was wearing white clothes so!??.. And yes the light must be facing the camera in order to leave a trail of light... imagine michael running in the dark, with chairs and tables everywhere while keeping his iPod facing the camera, in 60 seconds! :D

    Michael Flux

@Heferkimbo, heh, yes, I must have looked like quite the crazy person - my movements were kinda similar to Ed from Cowboy Bebop :p

    Michael Flux

@Smithy, Hmm, not entirely sure what you mean by 'place entire light in front of camera'... But I mean I was just doing this with the iPod (I just didn't have any other bright lights on me) - and was maybe 15 meters or so away from the camera. Reason why there's no me in the final shot was because the iPod I was holding it at arms' length from me (so no reflections) and you don't actually see me because I don't glow at all ^_^

  8. yonasu

I definitely prefer the larger images, keep it like this :)

The dining area looks really nice, although the chairs don't look very comfy. Also, how did you manage to take that "ghost" photo without leaving any footprints in the sand? Was the sand hard or did you actually cover the prints after each step? :D

    Michael Flux

@yonasu, Yeah, those chairs are horrible, your back hurts like hell after you sleep in them for a few hours :(

Also, what kind of a silly question is that :p Since when do ghosts leave footprints anyways :p

  9. Heferkimbo

Amazing!, i know what to expect when i come here: PURE QUALITY...

  10. ensiz

I like the pictures dude! The beach-lounge-chair things in the beach are called "Palapa" =)

  11. Coco the Bean

I love beaches at night! (Especially in winter!) Much more peaceful that way.

"I can't even imagine what kind a crazy and/or drunk loon I looked like while running around the trees with the iPod at 3 in the morning."

LOL. It's ok, it's 3 in the morning, no one's gonna care. :P

Btw, the large photos are great. :3 A smaller size wouldn't do them justice.

Every one on internet searches for really tight content. Its very unfortunate with most of the websites published posts that are boring and out of context articles, just to show that new material is being published. Contrary to that immoral practice, this article is a really tight-written article.
