How I Got Started

Hi all, Santa here again, just a post for you all about how I got started with animal rescue. Before I start, just wanted to say, sorry neither of us have been posting in a while, just been really busy school, work, and everything else, also sorry for some of the photos being of bad quality, had to dig them up from an old camera, online, and old printed photos. Anyways, back to the post.
All my life I’ve been around animals, most of which were stray cats. One of the cats I met while living at an old apartment complex was a beautiful cat named Suprina. Before I found out she had owners I had begun calling her Angel and she took to the name pretty well. She was an indoor/outdoor cat whose owner’s never got her spayed, so every time she had kittens (twice a year) they would try and find them homes. Despite me constantly telling them to get her fixed, they still never did. Finally sometime around September or October of 2006 she gave birth to four wonderful kittens, the owners said they would try and find them homes as well, then get her fixed after they moved that coming up December. When the kittens were a month old Angel had come back to them carrying another kitten that she had found outside, the kitten was of the same age as her own so she had decided to keep it. Sometime around November of 2006 the owners were packing up and getting ready to move. They were staying within the complex but on the other side of it, so it was a few blocks away from their old apartment.
On February 21, 2007 I got a surprising phone call from a friend who was neighbors with them. She said she and her cat were looking out the bedroom window and directly 10 feet from her window on the small shed roof that links to another apartment building, in the second floor bathroom window was Angel and a kitten. I was shocked; there was no way that could be true I thought. Never the less, I ran over there to take a look.
Turns out it really was her. I climbed up a small tree leading up to the second floor and shed roof, as I did Angel started purring and her kitten jumped out of the window, on to the roof, on a tree branch and crawled towards me. After meeting the kitten I followed both of them through the window and into the apartment. There I met two more kittens; both were so badly thin that they couldn’t even walk. One was Angel’s own kitten; the other was the one she had adopted. I had fed them all and then left to go home. Over the next week me and my cousin had met Angel’s other two kittens. All together she had two beautiful boys, Shadow, an all-black male (who I sadly have no photos of), and Hunter, a very handsome silver tabby. The three girls were Midnight, an all-black female. Magic, a tabby who looked just like her momma. Also Baby, an all-grey Russian blue mix (the one Angel adopted).
After a few months we had moved all the cats to the building directly across from the side of the one they were in at the time. This way they could go back and between the buildings threw the bathroom windows. Because I myself preferred the first floor apartment I decided to make it a comfy stay for all of us. It was after all an empty abandoned apartment. I had dragged in a couch from the third floor of the building, it was in a different empty apartment (both building were completely abandoned). I ended up fixing all the lighting, and cleaned the place up for them. Sadly the bathroom had a huge hole in the ceiling and the bathtub was filled with lots of junk, so that we left as it was.
Once the complex’s maintenance had tried to close off that building and destroying the apartment we were staying in, we moved back to the first one Angel had been staying in. There I re cleaned it, and they lived happily for a while.
On the 1st of May, 2007 Angel gave birth to a litter of 5 kittens. Four of which were tabbies, and one all-black. A month later I had rescued a litter of 5 all tabby kittens, all the same age as Angel’s. They were born in an empty apartment two blocks away from the apartment I kept Angel and her kitties in.
The mom was a feral cat, and the maintenance knew she had kittens in there. When the feral mom was out of the apartment they went in and broke down all the walls (they were planning to re-do the apartment the next month anyways). They left the kittens to die under the drywall and locked off the building so the mom couldn’t get back in. My cousin and I had gone in once we discovered what happened, took the kittens and brought them to Angel. She willingly took them in and raised them as her own.
During the summer that year we adopted out two of the younger kittens to friends. Then a bit later one of the kittens had run away. She was the daughter of the feral mom, and was also just as feral herself. Then a few months later Shadow had run away as well, he wasn’t feral, just very scared of everything. Soon the maintenance began trying to re-do the apartments the cats were staying in, and I decided it was time to figure out more permanent arrangements. I began contacting different shelters and rescues.
I came across a place called Almost Home Animal Rescue League. Emailed them and that same day got a reply from a woman named Courtney. She had agreed to take in these cats and help find them homes.
After she had taken all these cats, I ended up rescuing Baby’s sister Ruby, and her four kittens, and another cat named Helena, along with her four kittens. Courtney took in all these cats as well. Sadly the day before she came to get them Helena escaped.
Once I had found her Courtney told me to bring her into the shelter myself, because the supervisor was angry at her. When I brought in Helena the supervisor was speaking with my mom and discovered these cats were all from a different city in which this specific organization didn’t operate.
Turns out, Courtney was already having lots of problems with the supervisor of Almost Home, and well, I don’t blame her. The woman was seriously crazy, and refused to listen to Courtney even when she knew Courtney was right. At that point Courtney and some other volunteers quit and took all their foster animals with them. By that time Angel was already adopted, and to my disappointment Ruby was in foster care with Gail (the supervisor). The rest of my rescue cats all left with Courtney. She then in November of 2007 started her own rescue called Paws for Life Rescue and Adoption. At that point I happily decided to join PFL, and since then have rescued many more cats.

@chun, at least they all have homes now. Hunter and Baby were adopted together, Magic and Midnight went home together. Same with Jojo and Sammy (black and tabby kittens), and George and Gracie (the two in the last photo). ^_^
